Locally listed buildings
Skip to:
Locally listed buildings have been identified as positive elements within the local environment.
They are of historic or architectural merit but do not benefit from the same protection as statutory listed buildings.
The listed buildings are protected locally by planning policy. Designation is about recognising what gives the building its special interest and then managing its future. Good management of locally listed buildings can lead to better neighbourhoods, so we will make sure that their special character is protected and enhanced.
Local Heritage List additions 2022
Local heritage
Local heritage listing allows a community and a local authority to identify heritage assets that are distinctive parts of the local history. It shows what makes them significant and their location in the borough.
Following the approval of new selection criteria, a survey of the borough was undertaken by volunteers and others to identify Barnet’s local heritage.
Officers, councillors, heritage experts and local volunteers assessed the entries against the selection criteria. Consultation with owners and occupiers was carried out and the responses considered before finalising the list of entries.
The Local Heritage List was approved by the Council’s Policy and Resources Committee on 6 January 2020.
Further additions to the list were then approved by Committee on 13 December 2022.
Barnet's Local Heritage List
The Local Heritage List is split into 4 separate documents. You can download the documents as PDFs. If you're looking for a specific listing, search the street name and you will find the first list entry for that particular street.
Selection criteria
The selection criteria have been developed using national guidance in an attempt to recognise those heritage assets of local importance.
The criteria were subject to public consultation and have been formally approved.
