Rev Julie Gittoes, vicar of St Mary’s and Christ Church Hendon, has been appointed Chair of Barnet Council’s newly launched Hendon Community Partnership Board.
The council has formed the partnership to bring together representatives of the local community, councillors and council officers to oversee and have input into the multi-million-pound Hendon redevelopment scheme.
The Hendon development includes new academic and public spaces, as well as facilities for local charities in modern buildings along the Burroughs in Hendon, whilst regenerating and redeveloping council-owned assets like Hendon Library.
As Chair, Rev Gittoes will provide the link between the Hendon community and the council to ensure residents have their say.
Rev Gittoes said: "I am getting involved in the Hendon Community Partnership Board because I am committed to this community.
“I look forward to engaging with local residents who are passionate about where they live and hope that together we can ensure that the development benefits our community and creates a safer, greener and accessible environment for all."
Cllr Sara Conway, Chair of the Community Leadership & Libraries Committee, said: “We are committed to community participation and giving residents a voice in council decisions that affect them.
“Forming the Hendon Community Partnership Board will help us work together to deliver the benefits for the local community promised in this development, including a newly refurbished and expanded Hendon Library with the local archive retained in their historic setting.”
The council is consulting on revised proposals to the Hendon scheme between 3 April and 5 May 2023, which include retaining and refurbishing Hendon Library.
The refurbishment includes preserving the library’s heritage features such as the iconic central staircase and the glazed ceilings of the upper reading rooms.
