To mark World Mental Health Day, Thursday 10 October, Barnet Council has launched a new mental health and wellbeing strategy designed to promote the mental wellbeing of children and young people.

The strategy was created following consultation and engagement with residents, youth and parent groups and using insights from national and local data.

It outlines key actions and commitments aimed at supporting individuals and families affected by mental health issues, and fostering environments where mental wellbeing is prioritised and understood.

Cllr Pauline Coakley Webb, Cabinet Member for Family Friendly Barnet, said:
"This strategy represents a significant step forward in our efforts to break down the stigma surrounding mental health.

“By committing to these principles, we can create a culture where mental health is openly discussed, and people feel supported when they need it most.

“On World Mental Health Day, we are reminded of the importance of coming together to champion wellbeing for all."

This mental health and wellbeing strategy is expected to serve as a framework for the council, businesses, and community organisations to collaborate to make meaningful improvements to mental health services and support systems.

Also launching from 10 October, a new pocket-sized guide ‘The Suicide Prevention Manual’ which supports those experiencing suicidal thoughts.

The Suicide Prevention Manual aims to help those experiencing suicidal thoughts by providing simple steps for managing those thoughts and seeking support.

Created by individuals from The Network Enablement Service, who have lived experience, and supported by the Barnet Council Public Health Prevention Fund, the guide will be distributed across Barnet, including libraries and health and wellbeing services.
