About our borough
Barnet is a borough with much to be proud of:
- 90% of our primary schools are good or outstanding, placing Barnet in the top 10% of the country
- a diverse community with 40.3% of the population defining themselves as Black, Asian or part of a Minority Ethnic group

Working in Barnet
We have a long-established culture of prioritising staff development here in Barnet. We are invested in our own staff as is evident from some of our colleagues who have been with us for many years and been supported to grow and develop their careers years.
Further to our staff not wanting to leave once they join, we have a refer a friend scheme for social work and lead practitioner roles that includes a financial bonus paid to the person making the referral after the successful completion of probationary period of the person they referred.

I started in Adult Social Care in January 2000, at the turn of the millennium. What began as a stop gap when I was 18, has developed into a hugely rewarding career through the nurturing and support of my colleagues, managers, the senior staff and organisational culture.
23 years later, I am fortunate that I, too, can champion investment into our staff as our greatest and most valuable asset.

I joined Barnet Council in 2016 in a post in an adult social work team. What struck me from the start was the support culture across the board from both my colleagues and the managers. In 2020 I started the Social Work Degree Apprenticeship through Barnet and am one of the first cohort members in Barnet council to be offered this apprenticeship in adult social care. This opportunity has shown me that Barnet values members of its workforce and promotes the professional development needs of staff. I am due to qualify this summer and look forward to my next steps in Barnet as a Social Worker.
