Hampden Way reconstruction

Background of scheme
Over the last 10 years Hampden Way has been subject to a deterioration in its condition, leading to the break up of the carriageway surface. This deterioration has been exacerbated by surface water flows moving through the sub surface towards Pymmes Brook.
In recent years we have carried out extensive patch repairs, which are also deteriorating at a quicker than expected rate.
An extensive review was completed in July 2022, with advantages and disadvantages, buildability, sustainability, health and safety, operations and maintenance, design life and cost all taken into account.
Having reviewed various proposals, we have opted for a full rebuild of the carriageway and installation of a new drainage system.
At a cost of around of £3million, the Hampden Way reconstruction is the biggest investment ever in a single carriageway by Barnet Council and is expected to prolong the life of Hampden Way in excess of 25 years.
Benefits of the scheme
We understand that the re-construction works will inconvenience local residents and businesses, as well as those that use Hampden Way. However, the essential works have many long term benefits including:
- creating a long-term solution to the current ongoing issues with the Hampden Way carriageway surface
- reducing the likelihood of future carriageway damage (potholes, etc), which will require ad-hoc carriageway closures and disruption to residents
- improving drainage in the area, reducing the risk of flooding
- providing an opportunity to collaborate with our utility partners, enabling them to access their apparatus to upgrade and maintain their network at the same time we are undertaking these reconstruction works.
Programme of works
To minimise disruption to residents, the reconstruction works will be undertaken in 5 phases. This means that the road will be closed in sections rather than needing to implement and full road closure.
- Excavation and removal of all existing carriageway material
- Removal of existing surface water drainage network
- Install new drainage system
- Reconstruction a new road
- Resurface the new road
We will also provide an opportunity for our utility partners (Thames Water, Affinity Water, Cadent Gas, BT, etc) to upgrade and maintain their network at the same time we are undertaking our works.
Phase two is currently underway. The road is closed from 39 Hampden Way to 77 Hampden Way.
Phase three is scheduled to start on Monday 11 November 2024 and will see the road closed from Hampden Square to 2 Hampden Way.
Phase one is complete.
Diverson route
Local diversions will be in place via Waterfall Road, Brunswick Park Road and Osidge Lane.

Road safety consultation
As part of our Hampden Way reconstruction works, our engineering team carried out a feasibility study to look into road safety issues raised by the local residents.
We are proposing to introduce a number of new road safety measures that will reduce the speed of vehicles, and also aim to address concerns of speeding, lack of safe crossing points, safe parking issues, and poor visibility at junctions.
Our consultation started on 8 August 2024, and ended on 5 September 2024.
Further details of the statutory consultation are available on Engage Barnet at engage.barnet.gov.uk.
We will publish the results of the consultation, our decision and how we are acting on the results of the consultation on the above web page on 26 September 2024
