Online conduct
The internet is a great resource which allows us to learn, be creative and connect with others which enriches our lives.
It can be difficult sometimes to keep up to date with technology which can be challenging, particularly if you are a parent or carer for a young person.
Everyone should be aware of their online conduct and the impact that it can have on ourselves and others.
Our online conduct can say a lot about us, so be mindful of what you post and that others are able to copy, share and comment on your information and posts.
Online privacy
It’s important to keep personal information private, never share passwords and to be mindful of the digital footprint that we leave.
Make a point to speak with young people about their online conduct, to keep personal information, such as their name, address and location safe and never share it with strangers.
Remember to tell children if they are ever worried about something or someone that they see online, to tell a trusted adult.
Check privacy settings
Social network sites are great for connecting with friends and family. Ensure that you remind children to check their account privacy settings regularly, including friends lists and removing unwanted contacts.
Discuss safe online spaces and tell young people to always ask for help if they see something online that upsets them or they don’t understand.
Online shopping
It is easy for young people to make online purchases without realising through in app charges.
Encourage young people not to share payment details and to keep their personal information private.
There are online tools which can block pop up advertisements and you can also switch off in-app purchasing on the device – these methods will help to prevent accidental purchases.
Social networking
Help young people to set up their social network profile and how to use it. Help them to set up privacy settings and explain what they should and shouldn’t share.
There is information which is safe for young people to share and information which they shouldn’t such as phone number or home address.
Explain what information should stay private and discuss the difference between sharing with trusted friends and family and sharing with everyone.
Blocking inappropriate content
There are lots of tools available which let you control what young people can see online and prevent access to inappropriate content.
Use parental controls to restrict access to inappropriate content and to limit the amount of time spent online. Discuss with young people why it’s important to limit their access to material which is safe for them to view.
