Schemes that are automatically applied if you qualify
Energy bills support scheme
This is available to all households with a domestic electricity connection.
Millions of households across Great Britain will receive non repayable discounts on their energy bills this winter. This is in line with the Energy Bills Support Scheme set out by the UK Government in 2022.
The £400 discount:
- is being administered by energy suppliers
- is being paid to consumers over 6 months with payments starting from October 2022
- will ensure households receive financial support throughout the winter months

Cold Weather Payments
During the winter, £25 extra per week is available when the temperature is 0 degrees or below for more than 7 days.
From November 2022, you will be able to check if you are eligible for the cold weather payment scheme.
You are eligible if you get certain benefits.
Winter Fuel Payments
People who are pension age and above could be eligible for Winter Fuel Payments from £250 to £600 to help pay for heating bills.
The amount you’ll get includes your ‘pensioner cost of living payment’. This is between £150 and £300. You’ll only get this extra amount in the winter from 2022 to 2023
Energy efficiency and upgrade schemes you can access
Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The government is providing grants to encourage property owners to install low carbon heating systems such as heat pump.

Sustainable warmth scheme
Provides financial support for a range of energy efficient upgrades, including:
- Insulation
- Air source, ground source or hybrid heat pumps
- Double glazing to replace single glazing
- Energy efficient doors
- Thermostats and heating controls
- Hot water tank insulation
Households must meet one of the other qualifying criteria:
- The home must have a low energy efficiency rating (an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G)
- Annual household income of £30k or less OR £20k after housing expenses
- Unemployed and receiving benefits related to income, disability or health
- State pension age and receiving housing credit

Free energy advice service for Londoners
The Seasonal Health Intervention Network (SHINE)External link is a fuel poverty referral network and free energy advice service for Londoners.
SHINE has a dedicated helpline and provides households with the help they need to; reduce utility bills, tackle energy debt and stay well and warm.
SHINE accepts referrals for households of any tenure, with an income below £16,190 or where a household member:
- has a disability
- has a long-term health condition worsened by the cold
- is a child under 15
- is an adult over 60
